Woolmarket Homes and Condos for Sale

One of the most interesting things about Woolmarket, Mississippi, is that it has never actually been a city. It had no mayor, city council, or even a police force. Nevertheless, this small community has done nothing but flourish since people began to settle in the area in the mid-19th century. According to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Woolmarket had obtained a right-of-way for a railroad to pass through it before the Civil War, which halted it from being built. Nonetheless, the already approved right-of-way turned into a major route for caravans hauling everything from beeswax, rosin, charcoal, and wool. In the 1880s, large loads of lumber started going through this route as well. It is reported that caravans stretched as far as a half a mile at times. These long wagon trains, coupled by its perfect position along the banks of the Biloxi River, helped Woolmarket became a thriving community. Not far from Woolmarket on the river’s bank was Stiglets Landing established by Captain Joseph Marion Stiglets. From this landing, Stiglets operated a fleet of schooners that hauled goods such as beeswax, turpentine, charcoal, lumber, and wool to New Orleans and Mobile. By far, more wool was produced in this area than any other commodity, thus it earned the name “Wool Market.” Today, Woolmarket remains an unincorporated community in Harris County and is a member of the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area.
