The city of Wiggins, Mississippi, was incorporated in 1904 and is a member of the Gulfport–Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area in Stone County. It was named after Wiggins Hatten. Hatten’s daughter, Madison Hatten, was one of the first people to establish a homestead in the area. Thanks to the booming timber industry in Mississippi, many Gulf Coast cities in the state got a great start, and many of the towns and villages in the area prospered and eventually grew into a thriving community. In 2010, disaster struck Wiggins in the form of a fire that swept through the town, burning most of the business district to the ground. Since there were no firefighting services, the residents of Wiggins were forced to use buckets of water and even dynamite to prevent the fire from spreading further. By the time the fire was done burning, 41 business, which includes the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad depot, had been reduced to ashes. Another interesting fact is that, at one point in time, Wiggins was known for its pickle production and was home to a large pickle processing plant, which eventually closed.
