Pass Christian Homes and Condos for Sale

Artifacts discovered in the Gulf Coast area show that humans have inhabited this part of the world for thousands of years. Even though most of the ancient Native American mounds have been destroyed over the years by artifact hunters, farmers, and housing developments, you can still find a few of them scattered throughout the state of Mississippi. In 1699, Spanish explorers discovered the area now known as Pass Christian, Mississippi. In the same year, the French established Biloxi and named the nearby channel Passe aux Huîtres. The French named the area Pass Christian for Nicholas Christian L'Adnier who lived on Cat Island and for a deep water pass that was nearby. In February of 1746, two French-Canadian explorers, Iberville and his brother Bienville, along with 48 men went in search of the Mississippi River. After a few days traveling, they made friendly contact with the local Native American tribes. After exploring the area for several months, the explorers returned to Cat Island, but they would later return to and establish a small community in the previously explored area. Though its history is somewhat sketchy after that, history shows that, in 1781, a woman by the name of Julia de la Brosse (also known as the Widow Asmard) own the land. When she passed away, she left 46,776 square-feet of land to a freed slave. His heirs later inherited the land after his passing and it was chartered as Pass Christian in 1848.
