Gautier Homes and Condos for Sale

Located in Jackson County, Mississippi, the quaint city of Gautier is named for Fernando Upton Gautier, founder of Fernando Gautier & Sons Sawmill. The sawmill was established in 1867 and is counted as being responsible for most of the area’s initial growth. Since the sawmill required a railroad to come through the town in order to pick up the lumber, it had to be marked on the map. People who lived there or visited the town saw the Gautier name on the water tower, thus it would end up being incorporated as such in 1986. Gautier saw yet another increase in population during the beginning of WWII with the establishing of Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation in 1938. Founded by Robert Ingersoll Ingalls, Sr, originally for Birmingham, Alabama, Litton Industries bought the ship making company in 1961. In 1968, Ingalls further expanding its facilities in order to facilitate the production of 12 United States nuclear-powered attack submarines and ended up employing 27,280 people by the time 1977 rolled around. In addition to all that, Gautier built a sprawling homestead known today by the locals as “The Old Place” and is located at the mouth of the Pascagoula River Basin. It’s still standing today and is open to the public for events such as weddings.
