Diamondhead Homes and Condos for Sale

Most of what is now Diamondhead was owned by the Gulf State Paper Company and the Easy Opener Bag Company until a man named Walter Gex purchased most of the land in 1937. In the 1960s, the Diamondhead Corporation, a large resort development company, set its sights on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, with Diamondhead being its first project. Interstate 55 made the area a perfect alternative to Florida or California during the warm weather months for Midwesterners. Furthermore, many people chose Diamondhead as a place to build or purchase a second home away from home. Since Diamondhead sits at the highest point of elevation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, it was named after the Hawaiian island of Oahu (spelled “Diamond Head”). In 1969, when plans for this community were unveiled, it was touted as the biggest of its kind in the United States. It would feature Hawaiian-style architecture, landscaping, and even the roads were named after roads in Hawaii. By 1973, most of the lots that were available had been sold to the public for building homes. Many of the residents from surrounding communities welcomed the huge development project since it brought with it many jobs and business opportunities.
