Bay St. Louis Homes and Condos for Sale

The establishment of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, has its origins dating as far back as 1698 when King Louis the XVI of France set his sights on locating the Mississippi River - also called the “Father of Waters.” For this mission, he sent three of his best men to search for and stake claim to all of the territories drained by this 2,350-mile long river: Pierre LeMoyne, Jean Baptiste, and Sieur de Bienville. There was only one problem: the Spanish had caught wind of the French king’s mission and had their own ships from its Saint Augustine colony located in what is now the state of Florida. It’s no surprise then that when LeMoyne, Baptiste, and de Bienville entered the Pensacola Harbor, they found the Spanish had already begun building forts Santa Rosa Island. It would be on February 10, 1699, that the French explorers finally landed on Ship Island after failing to discover Mobile Bay. Once the French explorers reached the area now known as Biloxi, the local Native American tribe there told them that the “Father of Waters” was located to the west. They decided to set up camp near the banks of the Bay of Saint Louis. After exploring the Mississippi River, Bienville returned to the Bay of Saint Louis and set up a colony, naming it after King Louis XVI.
